I'm writing a book about the history of Resident Evil!
Today, I'm happy to announce that I'm officially underway with penning a book about the history of the Resident Evil series! I'm hoping to have it completed by the end of 2017 for publication by mid-2018 in paperback and e-book formats.
There are already a number of amazing written and visual retrospectives authored by amazing authors whom I respect. There is even a book about the series' influences written in French. I hope that my book, when it does come out, can find a place alongside these great works in helping readers understand the history and appeal of Resident Evil and more importantly, preserve this valuable piece of gaming history for future generations.
I think Resident Evil is the greatest game series in existence today. It's had a tremendous influence on my life and career in the gaming industry. I became bilingual and learned Japanese partly because of Resident Evil. I've traveled solely for Resident Evil. Not a day has gone by since 2000 that I haven't in one way or another thought about Resident Evil.
I've actually been writing this book on and off since 2014 (whose draft is actually based on a now-taken down Resident Evil Retrospective I wrote for 1UP in late 2012 prior to RE6's release), so I've got plenty of material down already, which I'm hoping to augment with interviews in the upcoming months. I'm not a natural-born professional writer, but something about this feels right. It's time I put those research skills I picked up in graduate school to good use. I will conduct interviews with Resident Evil staff, past and present, in English and in Japanese. I will also offer my insight and where reasonable, insight from respected game industry veterans.
I've got a cover artist committed, and I've discussed the project with publishers. This will be an independent project. I'm pretty excited! Hope to have more information in the coming months.
